The Mercy's Prostate Cancer Clinic opened in September 2009. Between September 2009 and December 2009 there were over 450 consultations in the Clinic and 157 referrals were made to the Consultant Urologist concerning Prostate related issues and Prostate Cancer.
Louise O’Sullivan, Facility Manager of LeisureWorld Chirchfield believes that ‘it is important that the Sam Allen Pitches get behind the community and showcase the excellent facilities that are on offer to the public in the wonderful 8 all weather newly refurbished pitches. LeisureWorld are delighted that there is such a strong turn out of support from the community and the ALL STARS and we hope that all participants enjoy the day!”
The clinic which only costs €95,000 to run per annum is facilitating the first and only Rapid Access PSA Clinic in Munster and is now resulting in traditional delays between an initial diagnosis and the beginning of treatment being reduced by between 4-6 weeks.
Approximately 2,422 men develop prostate cancer each year in Ireland. This figure is similar to the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer each year in Ireland. Prostate Cancer is responsible for 500 deaths annually or 11% of all cancer deaths amongst men.
Through the establishment of 'The Men's Health and Prostate Cancer Fund' the Mercy Hospital are committed to raising over €100,000 annually. These funds are then used to provide 100% of the finances required to provide this clinic.
